The
digital analysis of images is rapidly improving. This leads to the
question: Can computers recognize art? The symposium Computers en Art
(March 27) at Tilburg University reviews the state-of-the-art. Speakers
from the Van Gogh Museum, Princeton University, the Japan Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology, the University of Amsterdamen de
and the Tilburg centre for Creative Computing (TiCC). Ernst van de
Wetering, Chair of the Rembrandt Research Project, will present a
critical view on computer analysis of art. Experts of the Van Gogh
Museum will address the analysis of the authenticity of Van Gogh's
paintings. The abilities of computers to support art historians will be
explored by Ingrid Daubechies of Princeton University and Hiroyuki Iida
from Japan. Emiel Krahmer of Tilburg University analyzes how language
affects the perception of art.
Programme of the symposium
After the symposium the Tilburg professors Jaap van den Herik and Eric
Postma, both affiliated to TiCC, will speak out their inaugural address
(in Dutch). The title of the address is Geloof in Computers (Belief in
Computers).
Participation to the English symposium is free of charge. Since the number of places is limited, registration is mandatory.
